PREPOSITION




What is preposition ?
Preposition is used before nouns or pronouns. They show the relation between noun and the rest of the sentence.
For Example
1.       There is a fort on the hill.
2.       I would be back in five minutes.
Kinds of Prepositions

1.       Single Prepositions
They  comprise only one world e.g. in, for, to, with, by, form etc.
2.       Compound Prepositions
They are added with prefix or suffix, e.g. before, behind, inside, outside, ahead, within, without etc.
3.       Phrase Prepositions
They comprise a group of worlds e.g. instead of, because of, due to, in according, in order to, in front of etc.



Uses of some common Preposition

I.                    In  : It is used before names of large cities, states and countries, It is used for tings at rest and It is used before names of months, years and seasons to express period of time.
For Example :
a.       My brother lives in Delhi.
b.      My uncle lives in England.

II.                  At :It is used before name of small towns, It is used for certain moment or period moment or point of time, It is used to tell the rate of something per unit, It is used for indicating time.
For Example :
a.       She lives at India.
b.      Milk is sold at Rs. 40/ litre.
c.       I go to college at 9 o’clock.

III.                Into :It is used for denoting inward motion and it is used to express the change in being or shape.
For Example :
a.       The plant has grown into a large tree.
b.      The students rushed into the class.

IV.                To : It is used to indicate forward motion and it is used in comparative degree of Adjectives.
For Example :
a.       My sister is going to Chandigarh tomorrow.
b.      He is senior to me.
c.       I prefer coffee to milk.

V.                  On :It is used denoting contact with the surface on which something is lying. It expresses the rest position and it is used before name of days and before date.
For Example :
a.       The books are lying on the table.
b.      My uncle is coming on Sunday.
c.       Our college will start on 25 February.

VI.                Upon : It is used for a thing in motion.
For Example :
a.       The cat jump upon the table.

VII.              Over : Over expresses at higher position as well as contact.
For Example :
a.       Water flows over the plants.

VIII.            With : It is used to denote accompaniment and it is used to denote the instrument of action.
For Example :
a.       I am going to Delhi with my parents.
b.      I write with a pen.
c.       I cut the vegetable with a knife.

IX.                By :It is used in passive voice of sentence, it is used before the name of any vehicle indicating journeys and it used to indicates a time not later than.
For Example :
a.       The letter was written by me.
b.      I go to college by car.
c.       I shall return by 5 o’clock in evening.

X.                  For :It is used showing purpose/ destination and It is used for a period of time.
For Example :
a.       I have come here for attending a meeting.
b.      We have been studying for two hours.

XI.                Science :It is used for a point of time.
For Example :
a.       We have been studying since in the morning.
